[Week 6] Introduction of My First Draft

1) Attract the Audience

Have you ever seen Lee Sang's works? You might feel very embarrassed at first because of its puzzle form. If you haven't seen his works yet, Let's see one of his representative works.

How do you feel? Can you understand this poem? Even many scholars haven't get accurate interpretation of this poem yet. Futhermore, many experts suppose that Lee Sang might suffered from mental illness and his convoluted works reflect this. In reality, above poem are considered as the masterpiece meaning his unknown and illogical fear toward modern civilization. Like this, there are many suppositions that Lee Sang was mental patient.

 

 

 

2) Explain the topic

 

 

There are a lot of kinds of mental illness. He often depicted his anxiety and fear toward something we take for granted such as forming family, woman and city life. In clinical psychology, illogical fear is one of symptoms of persecutory dillusion. So, it is possible to suppose that he had persecutory dillusion.

 

 

 

3) Declare Your Thesis

 

 

For these reasons, Lee Sang might suffered from persecutory dillusion during life.

 



[Week 3] Articulation

1) My Argument

My argument is 'Lee Sang was patient of persecutory dilusion.' Have you ever read his works such as '오감도烏瞰圖 ' , '날개 Wings' and '산촌 여정 Travel to the mountain village'? Maybe readers realized that he was unusual poet. Many of us realized that most of his works depicts human's psychological anxiety, resistance toward civilization and social life. From this point, I began to guess that he maybe suffered from persecutory delusion that thinking people will try to injure one without any reason.  

2) How I Found My Argument

My First research question was 'What is the common emotion permeated in his works?' For answer this question, I should choose his the most representative works among many works. As a result following works were chosen.

Almost of his works reflects his inner anxiety, and I arranged types of anxiety - what he is afraid of  in his chosen works like above chart. We can know that he was afraid of woman, city and parents mainly.  This process helped me to think that he suffered from persecutory delusion to some extent. 

Second question was 'What is the persecutory delusion?' According to column published by Seoul National University Hospital, Persecutory delusion means 'Wrong belief that someone or certain things will injure oneself without any logical reason'. This is often formed by oneself's anger, annoying, inferiority feeling. This also includes depression and bipolar disorder. I can understand what is persecutory delusion and judge more clearly whether Lee Sang was suffered from this disease due to this information. Through this questions, I could get my own conclusion about my topic.

3) New Research Questions

In '2) How I Found My Argument', I understand that Lee Sang's works reflects fear toward woman, city life and parents. Then, I want to research 'What did make he have this fear?'. and 'Did he show symptoms about persecutory delusion during his life?' to support my argument. Also, to write unique and logical essay, I should spend time to think 'How I support my argument with using parts of his works'. So, I should read his chosen works and find what part reflects his anxiety well. So, I continued to research a lot of books about him and get information about his life in Internet.

4) Connection to the Harvard Sampler

The first chapter of Harvard Sampler is 'The Human Mind', psychology. In that chapter, Author said that psychology is about pedestrian process in our mind. But, it is true that studying abnormal psychology which is about mental illness or criminal mind, genius's studying method is funnier than studying ordinary cognitive process. So, I decide to research abnormal psychology connecting literary I am interested in.
